Import facilities and consumption

Import your facility data using XLSX files. The import process has two phases:

  1. Facility Import - Facility master data (name, type, location, control) Project → Data → Import/Export → Import facilities XLSX template:

facilities_import_template_v13.95 KB 2. Consumption Import - Electricity usage data Project → Data → Import/Export → Import facility consumption XLSX template:

facility_consumption_import_template_v110.67 KB

Import your facilities with location and control parameters.

Column Required For Emissions Type Description
Facility Name Yes Yes Text Unique name for the facility
Country Yes Yes Text Country code (e.g., “US”, “DE”)
External ID No Yes* Text Your internal ID for updates
Facility Type No No Text office, warehouse, manufacturing, etc.
Region/State No No Text Regional location
Address No No Text Facility address
Ownership Type No No Text owned, leased, operated (default: owned)
Equity Percentage No No Decimal 0-100%
Financial Control No No Boolean Has financial control? (default: false)
Operational Control No Yes Boolean Has operational control? (default: true)
Include in Emissions No Yes Boolean Track in emissions? (default: true)
Notes No No Text Additional notes

Required = Yes: Must be provided for every facility For Emissions = Yes: Needed to calculate emissions

Note*: External ID is required for consumption import to link records.

The system automatically normalizes values:

Facility Type:

Input Stored As
office, headquarters, hq office
warehouse, storage warehouse
manufacturing, factory, plant manufacturing
retail, store, shop retail
data center, data centre, datacenter data_center
(other) other

Ownership Type:

Input Stored As
owned, own owned
leased, lease, rent, rented leased
operated, managed operated

Boolean Fields:

  • True: yes, y, true, 1, x
  • False: no, n, false, 0, (empty)

Use External ID to enable re-importing:

  • With External ID: System finds and updates existing facility
  • Without External ID: Always creates new facility

After importing facilities, import their electricity consumption data.

Column Required For Emissions Type Description
Facility External ID Yes Yes Text Must match facility’s External ID
Start Date Yes Yes Date Period start
End Date Yes Yes Date Period end
Electricity Amount Yes Yes Decimal Electricity consumed
Electricity Unit Yes Yes Text kWh, MWh, GWh, TWh
Renewable Percentage No Yes Decimal 0-100%, affects market-based emissions
Market-Based Factor No Yes Decimal Custom emission factor (kg CO2e/kWh)
Supplier Name No No Text Energy supplier name
Grid Connection Type No No Text grid, off-grid (default: grid)
Notes No No Text Additional notes
  • ISO: 2025-01-15
  • German: 15.01.2025
  • US: 01/15/2025
  • Excel numeric dates
Unit Description Conversion
kWh Kilowatt-hours Base unit
MWh Megawatt-hours × 1,000 kWh
GWh Gigawatt-hours × 1,000,000 kWh
TWh Terawatt-hours × 1,000,000,000 kWh

Emissions are calculated automatically using the Climatiq API when consumption data is saved.

Location-Based (default):

  • Uses average grid emission factors for the facility’s country
  • Reflects the actual emissions from the local electricity grid
  • Based on country and electricity amount

Market-Based:

  • Reflects contractual arrangements with electricity suppliers
  • Uses renewable percentage and/or custom emission factors
  • Affected by:
    • Renewable Percentage: Reduces emissions proportionally
    • Market-Based Factor: Your custom emission factor overrides API value

Facility emissions are categorized based on operational control:

Condition Scope Category
Operational control = Yes Scope 2 2.1 (Purchased electricity)
Operational control = No Scope 3 3.3 (Fuel- and energy-related activities)

The Renewable Percentage field allows you to account for renewable energy:

Renewable % Effect on Market-Based Emissions
0% Full emissions calculated
50% Emissions reduced by 50%
100% Zero market-based emissions

Note: Renewable percentage only affects market-based calculations. Location-based emissions always reflect the actual grid mix.

  1. Set country correctly: Required for emission factor selection
  2. Use External IDs: Enables linking consumption data and future updates
  3. Set operational control: Determines whether emissions are Scope 2 or 3
  4. Track renewables: Use Renewable Percentage to account for green energy purchases
  5. Use custom factors: Provide Market-Based Factor if you have supplier-specific data
  6. Include in emissions: Only facilities with this flag will be included in reports
  7. Report monthly/quarterly: Import consumption for each billing period for accurate tracking
